Eternal Light at Manikarnika Ghat—A 24/7 Tribute| Asth.RED | Call 1800-121-6782

According to ancient legend, Lord Shiva bestowed a blessing of perpetual peace upon Manikarnika Ghat. This sacred site, located in Varanasi—formerly known as Kashi—holds a special place in Hindu spirituality. The story goes that Lord Vishnu fervently prayed to Shiva, requesting that the revered city of Kashi remain unharmed during a cosmic dissolution. Moved by Vishnu’s devotion, Shiva, accompanied by his consort Parvati, granted this wish. As a result, it is believed that any soul whose last rites are performed here achieves moksha, or ultimate liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

Manikarnika Ghat is renowned as a pivotal Hindu pilgrimage site where cremation rites are conducted. Here, it is thought that the souls of the deceased are liberated, ascending to the heavens as their physical remains are consigned to the flames. The ghat is a place of profound significance, where rituals are performed throughout the day, accompanied by mournful hymns and the constant presence of smoke. It is a place where death is met with reverence and solemnity, as visitors come to witness the final rites and honor those who have passed away.

Situated among the many ghats of Varanasi, Manikarnika Ghat stands out as the primary location for cremation. If you venture slightly beyond this burning ghat, you will encounter a submerged temple, adding to the site’s spiritual mystique.
